I had no idea you could grow a pineapple plant from the crown of a pineapple! Who knew! I thought pineapple grew on trees, but they are actually more like a bush. And each plant produces 1 fruit, which takes 6 months to ripen? I saved a crown from the pineapple I cut up today so the kids and I can try it. www.dole-plantation.com/Growing

I got to tour a pinapple farm once. Actually it was a coffee plantaition in Jamaica but they had a large section dedicated to pineapples and they were testing various strains (hybrids? varities? whatever it is) for Dole. We got to sample several varieties as part of our tour lunch. Really interesting tour.

We wemt to the Dole farm in Hawaii and came home and tried it, but have had no luck. I think our summer must be too short.

I didn't know that! But, I do know that if you put the bulb of your green onion in a glass of water, the roots will grow and you can replant them. They re-grow beautifully.

I didnt know that about the green onions. I have regrown celery, and it starts really well. But celery is hard to grow. It takes a long time and you have to wrap it to prevent it from getting sunburn.

I just had this visual of a row of celery stalks with little tropical print sun umbrellas stuck in the dirt, hanging over them.

Probably beats slathering them with zinc oxide

Actually, you can wrap them in paper or plastic. I like the umbrellas though. That is way more my style.

Would make for a much more visually interesting garden, too.

I bought a pineapple plant once with the pineapple on it. It was small, it grew al summer and was a medium size pineapple so we finally ate it. A few weeks later I was reading the notes on that plastic thing they stick in the dirt and it said "for decorative purposes only, not for eating". We are all still alive, but I wonder why they would sell a pineapple thats not for eating. It is my favorite fruit. LOL
It was a cool plant to have though and I would grow one again, this time from the top of one.

You could always make little outfits for the stalks, would certainly make for an interesting garden!

It said the same thing. I asked the clerk if it was some poisonous strain or something. He told me that they often get decorative food plants that say that and he thought it was because maybe they aren't hybrid to be like what people expect from the grocery store, so it covers them from returns. He wasn't totally sure though. He hadn't noticed it on herbs before, but it's usually seen on those mini pepper plants, which are safe to eat. This place has a no questions asked return policy on most their plants.

I always wondered if those mini pepper plants were safe to eat because honestly I have never seen them not advertised as a decorative plant.
I got 10 more pineapple yesterday though to cut and dehydrate so I may try to grow 2 or 3 of the tops to see how it goes. Its not like I dont have plenty of pots around here......
And if you have never dehydrated pineapple to eat as a snack, I recommend it. They are so good! Taste like the pineapple life savers, except better for you.

If I had a green thumb, and a warm house, I'd be growing pineapples all over. They're my favorite fruit. And I love the look of pineapple so much I have pineapple lamps, curtain rods, curtain hold backs, even the number sign on my house has a painted pineapple. Why yes, I am odd.

When I was in elementary school I had a tropical themed birthday party and my grandma took the top of the pineapple plant home and planted it....it lived until I was in my teens! She kept it in her living room near the picture window. It never produced fruit of course but it always looked nice. My grandma could plant a stick and grow a beautiful tree whereas I am lucky to keep a cactus alive.

I knew you could do it but never tried (I'm not great with plants). I almost bought one like Clean's at the produce outlet a few years ago - they had the cutest tiny pineapples on them. One of my cats likes to chew on the pineapple leaves when I buy one and they are sharp. Plus he barfs a lot, so I was afraid to get the plant.

I have a cheaper, plastic version of this that works fine. We core out the pineapple meat, scrape the remaining pulp on the inside off with a spoon, make a blended drink and add back to the pineapple. In the cooler months, we pretend we're somewhere tropical.

I kept breaking the plastic ones I had. When I bought pineapple this year it had a tag on it showing you how to cut the core out with a knife. It was much easier!
WE liked drinking the juice from the cored out pineapple when we used one of those things though!
