My cherry tomatoes always seem to be okay. My bigger ones can have problems. Sometimes it is becasue of too much rain, sometimes not enough rain, etc.

Does anyone do the upside down thing? It looks interesting, but I'd have to find a place to hang them. I did it one year. You need to water them all the time or they die. Needless to say mine didn't make it. If you have a place where you can stick a hose or something in them and turn it on 2-3 times a day, then you might have better luck than me. On the other topic, I love tomatoes. The problem is mine tend to come late, even the early girls. Water isn't a problem because they are in boxes and get watered daily by the sprinklers early in the morning. Is there an ideal time of day to water tomatoes? We get afternoon sun in the back yard.

I used to water in the evening when the sun wasn't too hot.
But last year, when all of my lovely zucchini and other squash died, I read that I should water early in the morning.

Early in the morning is suppose to be best so the leaves/foliage dry out.

I read that too a few years ago. If you water at dusk the leaves can't dry off, and it's supposed to start rot on the plants. Now I water mid-morning.

The yellow varieties tend to be less acidic. We had six plants/varieties last year all heirloom. I plan a mix of heirloom and high producers this year. The heirlooms taste better, but don't produce enough for me.

Which heirlooms did you use Velvet?
I want to put in one heirloom and one yellow cherry this season and am looking for recommendations.
All will be container grown.
Oh, and welcome to the board.

I think two of them were Cherokee Purple and Mr Stripey or something similar. I really liked both, but they just didn't produce a lot. It was a pretty hot year though, so some things just struggled.
Romas produce like crazy, but they do have a little bit thicker skin which isn't as appetizing when eating slices, etc. in my opinion. But for spaghetti sauce, the are nice. Very meaty.
I'm thinking of putting in a couple beefsteak type, a couple of Romas and a couple heirlooms this year. I haven't forayed out of the standard tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and peppers much, but I plan to make my garden a little bigger each year and try something new. Might try beans this year. But that is info for another topic....

Thanks
I was leaning towards the Cherokee Purple and it's good to see someone else mention it.

I got some tomatoes last year (simple container planting-4 plants). That's unimpressive by gardening standards but the year before my tomatoes rotted on the vine so it's a vast improvement.
I got cherry tomatoes which were great, and an early yield variety which I was unimpressed by. They ripened at the same time as the cherry tomatoes.
I'd like to try another early yield variety-i found that I still had several tomatoes waiting to ripen when we got frost and they all went bad.
Shirley U Geste- did you do the upside down ones with the cage? Those were the ones I didn't do to well with.

Hi Beantown, no I haven't tried the upside down ones. Friends here have tried them and didn't get good results. We get so hot here that they dry out too fast and need constant attention and watering, so I am going to pass on those. I do have one huge pot that I will put some in this year, just waiting till it warms up a bit. We are supposed to have a hard freeze tonight so it's still a bit early. Not cold by your Boston standards, but darn cold for us.

With all this tomato talk, I think I might try the cherry ones this year too.
My big tomato ones have always been a major flop in previous years but I think the cherry ones faired better.
I think I tend to overwater.

Shirley-i don;t feel so bad now-those upside down ones were the ones that rotted. The only problem I have is trying to get enough cherry tomatoes for an actual salad:-)
I was told to make sure the soil is loose(mine probably wasn't).
and I'm also trying Neptune's Garden fish fertilizer this year. I used it years ago (we actually used to sell it). It's natural & organic (which I especially like for produce).
Maybe during the summer we can compare bounty. I'm working on my blueberries this year too. If they survived the winter.

I think I tend to overwater. I think part of my problem when I tried the inverted ones were heavy rains. I prefer the cherry because they ripen quicker and stay firm. Less time on the vine to generate problems.

I really really want to have tomatoes this year.
It's been 3-4 years since I did veggies and I miss the tomatoes.
I've pretty much decided on Cherokee Purple and have a huge pot for them, so when the weather allows I will put one in.
They already have the plants at the nurseries here, but with a freeze coming tonight I don't want any of those early plants and will wait a bit.
I might also do a pot of the yellow cherry tomatoes too. I eat a lot of salads in the summer and those are perfect for that.

I guess I'll try some tomatoes again this year. I'm aiming for 4. Tomatoes, not plants. That would be double my crop from last year, so that's not too bad.
