Speaking of birds and calendars, after I typed the above, I glanced at this year's calendar and realized the cute birds the cat was watching yesterday (that I'd never seen before) are the same as my January bird. LOL!

I long for the days long gone, of when our backyard was filled with beautiful red wing blackbirds every afternoon. I think ours fell victim to the mysterious mass die-offs because I've only seen 2 or 3 over the past few years.
We have regular cardinal families, blue jays, mourning doves, and many I don't know the names of. We've even had a gigantic hawk or two make their presence known. But the big blackbirds and crows that like to destroy seedlings during garden season are the ones I can't stand the sight of.
Oh, we also have a few owls in the area. SO was upset yesterday morning cuz "Mr. Hoot Owl" woke him up. Dang, I hope Mr. Owl goes on a tangent, daily!

Bets, you can have some of my red-winged blackbirds! Every spring they descend on my feeders every morning and empty them in an hour! I have to ration seeds when they're around.

The flocks we had made such a pretty sight in the afternoons we never really minded. But I really wish SO would learn the concept of rationing. He's stubborn and won't, so he fills one feeder up and dumps the rest on the ground. I'm talking 2-lbs daily, so the $ adds up over the course of a month. And the other thing that bugs me is he waits till late in the day a lot of times. I can't seem to make him understand that what ever is left over is probably feeding mice after dark. Grrrrrrrrrr

Exterminator told us that you must take a skunk 14 miles away or "like a cat" they find their way right back. Best to take them over a bridge because they hate water.
Hahaha. Yes, send those suckers to New Jersey. (and I was wondering what my emoticons would actually be apropos of)

Hootie would love a bird feeder. We had a big fat squirrel this morning chowing down on what I put out. Quincy loves to watch them too.

That's a nice thing about here... no squirrels So I can ground feed the doves and have hanging feeders for the little birds. Although in the summer I have to watch for Roadrunners, cause they will swoop in and catch any birds that are on the ground and make a quick lunch of them.

Roadrunners are nasty mean birds. They were mis-cast in the cartoon. After living out here, my sympathy is with the coyote now.
