I put in the request a week before we left. Gave at least a week last two years, too, and every year came home to find crinkled, smashed mail in the box. We really didn't get much so just hope something wasn't left in the trough under the boxes because cleaning people will throw out. Guess we'll never know. I even put in the notes to NOT deliver before the 18th. Should have gone with my gut and asked neighbor across the hall to please check box (I have spare key). If we're still here next year, I'll definitely do that. You know complaining would only result in mail getting lost or delivered to wrong address in retaliation. *sigh*

Stay, why not turn in a hold request for a few days, about 3 weeks ahead of a set date as a test and see if works?

Good idea, especially since we'll be home to see if it happens.
Our 9 day adventure:
I made rookie mistake of not putting on sunscreen day 1 and wound up getting burned, DH backed into a concrete pole in parking garage and busted taillight lens and put softball size dent in bumper. The lights still work. 2 largest pieces pretty much covered it so we picked up all but 5-6 tiny pieces and he glued it together and covered in clear tape. At distance, you wouldn't know it was busted. Held up so far. I got knocked off my feet in the ocean with a wave and couldn't get back up so thankfully DH saw I needed help and pulled me up. We drove way down to Murrells Inlet to get she crab soup at seafood market and also ate at one of the many bar/restaurants. Had too many containers for small cooler and DH opened the large one and we both reeled back from the stench. Some cheese escaped Ziploc that he didn't notice and in the heat and humidity and lack of air, it fermented down to skunk or paper mill level. Glad it happened then than when we were leaving and no way to clean and disinfect. Biting black fly season must have started Thurs., our last beach day, because they were horrible. And invaded pool area Friday as well. Started packing up to load up non-essentials on Friday and zipper on main compartment of DH's rolling duffel broke. Lastly, he just brought up my heavy rolling duffel and the handle broke off. I say it's still usable with the fabric handle, but he shook his head. I got it from GW for whopping $2.75 many years ago. No brand name anywhere, but it's been the most stable rolling duffel going over practically any surface (one thing my nicer, pricier Columbia one failed too often).
We were thrilled we didn't see one cockroach anywhere, no homeless people wandering around, sleeping on public benches, begging for money or cigarettes, drug dealing, crack smoking, hookers on corners a block from parking garage where we used to stay, we actually felt safe walking around and people were overall a lot friendlier. We actually drove through our old stomping grounds and confirmed we'll never stay around there again.

Oh yeah, and the best part was coming home and not finding a tree rat nest on our balcony!
