Good morning, everyone! Another month almost gone and into another hot, sweltering August. We've actually had it pretty good around here, but joining the very hot, humid group this week. Hope everyone has a snappy day today!

I woke up this morning and was going to walk but accuweather said “rain starting in 12 minutes” and then “in 40 minutes”. So I tried taking the puppy for a walk but he isn’t having it. Finally stood there until a guy was walking his dog and we followed him a bit. He goes out for a half mile or so.
Then the dogs and I played while rain was threatening. Finally left at 9:15 AM. It was starting to get hot. Shadow was ok though. It was only 74 degrees but it was humid. Rest of the week is supposed to be worse. Will get out earlier.

At least you're on the bottom floor, Val. We're on the top so get the brunt of the heat in summer and cold in winter.

You shouldn't be getting the worst of the cold, stay. Heat is supposed to rise. In past apartments where I lived on an upper flow, winter was nice. Summer, not so much.

We're in a corner that gets the harshest of the cold and wind blowing at our bedroom, so that's always the coldest in winter. Doesn't help the windows don't seal properly in either room.
Found out last night DH has a first cousin who recently sold her house because her husband died. Nothing special, but location location location (rather not say where). Bought in 1988 for $350,000. Sold for, I kid you not, $16.5 million. Not a bad investment, eh?

We were at the beach lat week and it rained three out of six days. Today isn't so bad out but we have had spotty thunderstorms. I think the next fews days are going to be near 100!! We are leaving for the Galapagos on Friday so we will miss most of the really host stuff.

I hope you have a great trip to the Galapagos Islands! What awesome wildlife there.
We still have about 1 1/2 months til our beach vacation so hoping we've timed it well with no hurricanes and no more than maybe a day or two at the most with rain (we're staying 9 days). No fun driving 12 hours one way and not get to enjoy the main reason we made the drive.

Wow. Twelve hours is a long drive. We only have to drive a little over two to get to the closest beach.

Sitting here nursing my second bee sting in a week. Haven’t been stung by a bee in forever. Bought some Benadryl and am putting ice on it. Got stung Monday morning. Now it is swollen and itchy.

Sorry about getting stung, labbypaws. I'm terrified of stinging insects. DH was painting shutters at MIL's a couple weeks ago and got stung in the hand by a wasp. Benadryl helped a lot.

I noticed last year that they added the Hatch Green Chile smoked sausage links to the year-round selection. That's one of the things I miss from ABQ - the smell of green chilis roasting. You get it sometimes here if you happen to hit HEB when they're roasting outside, but in ABQ every place roasts all day long it seems

The stores used to roast more than they have done in recent years. Probably hard to get an employee to stand out there in the hot temps to roast chilis and I don't blame them. Nothing like standing over a hot fire pit roasting chilis in 104 degree weather.

The local big market had their Hatch chile roaster going - unfortunately, they were done by the time we arrived to shop, but I overheard one of the employees saying that they had about 30 people standing around it, despite the drizzle.
I love Hatch chiles and purchase them for stirfry.
The DH has officially left for RAMROD, picking up his riding buddy and heading out to stay near the ride start. He couldn't sleep well last night worrying about his back, and had me place a capsicum patch over the place, and took a couple of lidocaine patches with him. I think he'll do great and be the all-conquering gearmonster!
@dawnr - have a great time at the Galapagos! I had relatives who lived in Ecuador (passed now) and they hosted two of my cousins for a trip there and it was amazing!

Nothing like standing over a hot fire pit roasting chilis in 104 degree weather. Most of the grocery stores and small retailers in ABQ used automatic roasters. They'll roast about 40 lbs of chiles at a pop. Surely HEB uses them too? Dang. Now I'm craving a carne adovada breakfast burrito with roasted green chiles I need to go put my order in for the green chile breakfast sausage and improvise this weekend

Nope, they had huge metal charcoal grill drums out in front of the stores. This was several years ago before Covid. Automatic roasters just aren't even close to roasting the chilis over charcoal. Back in those days they would also have hot dogs grilled in front of the stores for sale on special occasions.
HEB used to do a lot of fun stuff out in front of the stores that they don't do anymore. Probably became more of a liability in these lawsuit happy days.

I have several of these and they work pretty well too: www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-9-inch-Personal-Box-Fan-with-3-speeds-Bk/1167832160?athbdg=L1600Fortunately my current apartment has ceiling fans (that actually work!) so between the ones in the bedroom and a rotating desk fan on the breakfast bar, it stays fairly comfortable here. I used to set my A/C at 80 in AZ and use fans all over the house, but out there in the lower humidty it was comfortable. Here? No so comfortable at 80. Not to me, anyway.

Kritter, DH has one of those he's used in the bedroom as well as taken on vacation and yes, they are very good cooling smaller areas.
Val, that pumpkin does look really neat when the wind blows it as in the video.

Kritter, I have found those to be more powerful than a large box fan. I have the exact same ones. Grey, beige and black colors. One black on my kitchen counter to match my appliances and one beige one in the family room to help with the cooling. I like that it fits right in on the kitchen counter. Also have one in the laundry room on the counter in front of the washer/dryer. I love that they are small yet powerful. I just had one burn out on us, but it was 5-6 yrs old so it did it's job for the price. They also go on sale a lot at CVS and ACE around here at end of summer.

I listen to the JD Robb Eve Dallas series on Audible. The series has had the same reader throughout all the books. The same reader does the VI Warshawski series, which is good because she's really good. But I have to remind myself every so often that I'm not listening to Eve Dallas, and it's not Peabody, Mira, Eve or Feeny who is speaking. It's VI and HER crew of misfits. A tad confusing but I'll probably get used to it in a few more chapters.
