Awww. Queen Elizabeth II has passed away. So sad. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, a beloved monarch whose reign spanned wars, a pandemic, 13 presidents and the winding down of Britain’s vast empire, died Thursday, Buckingham Palace confirmed. She was 96. Her son Charles now becomes king.

I made this a separate thread. I felt she deserved it. Plus there will be a lot going on in the UK in the next few weeks.www.bbc.com/news/uk-61585886

Very sad at the passing of Queen Elizabeth II - I always admired her. She was 96 and active almost up until the end. <<As a 21-year-old princess, Elizabeth had vowed to devote her life to service. Reflecting on those words decades later, during her Silver Jubilee in 1977, she declared: "Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I do not regret nor retract one word of it.">> www.bbc.com/news/uk-61585886I remember during the Queen's Speech even crazy, noisy London would fall almost completely silent. I also once saw her at the Cenotaph where she appeared to crowds assembled on Remembrance Day - there were at least one hundred thousand gathered (London can whip up a crowd that big in no time - it's almost eerie). The two minutes of silence observed was dead silent. People were assembled outside Buckinham Palace waiting for news. When the news of her death was announced, very eerily a rainbow appeared over the Palace - it was a rain-washed day so something like that will happen, but what are the chances of it at that time, and that way?

I've always admired how she carried herself with dignity and decorum. I'm sure she'll have mourners all over the world paying respects. I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but at least it was peaceful. Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II. You will be greatly missed.

Wow, that rainbow over the palace at that time gave me chills Chap! Didn't her husband pass only a year or 2 ago? At that age the one remaining often follows soon after. She was a remarkable Royal. New King and PM within a week of each other? Interesting days ahead for the UK but what else is new these days.

Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on the cover of TIME in April 1929.

Charles kept his name - given the association with the previous two Charles (I and II) it was something that down through the centuries was shied away from. I figured Charles has been Charles for 70 years, and it would be strange to decide he's going to be King Arthur or something. Also, he's the spittin' image of my first husband save for build (first husband was thin) - so I'm reminded of my unlamented ex- every time I see poor Charles. Prince Philip died just over a year ago at age 99 - I'm not surprised QE II followed him. Her mother lived to be 102 and was pretty peppy the entire time. They have longevity in that family so I expect Charles will be on the throne for a while. A lot of people would rather see William on there - William and Kate are quite popular, but Charles has always had a strong belief in environmental causes - he might give that PM they have now some trouble.

R.I.P., lovely lady. How cute she was in her later years, in her colorful outfits with matching hats.

She said she wore colors because how else would those on the back rows be able to see her, after they'd spent all that effort turning out to the event?
