I think I laughed out loud when I got a notice from Poshmark promoting "coastal grandma" clothing looks. Within hours the Today show had a segment on the same subject. So I guess it is a thing.
It has actually been around for some time, especially in my area even though I am nowhere near a coast. AZ is retirement central. I'm thinking Flax, Blue Fish and other artsy brands.
Any thoughts on this trend?

I was curious what it was so I googled it. www.julesbuono.com/coastal-grandmother-aesthetic/Coastal grandmother aesthetic is based on the clean and classic style of middle-aged, wealthier women living in luxurious oceanfront properties, similar to that of Diane Keaton in the Nancy Meyers movie, Something's Gotta Give, set in the Hamptons.
Coastal grandmothers wear cashmere and linen, they love to garden, take leisurely walks on the beach when it's slightly windy, and sip white wine while reading on their wraparound front porch.
They cook fresh meals with goods they picked up at the farmers market in their open concept kitchens accessorized with neutral and natural elements like butcher block and rattan.
And, naturally, they listen to soft jazz and the oldies while doing so.
Coastal grandmothers wear neutral-colored chinos, capris so they can easily walk on the beach, cashmere everything (she can afford it), breezy linen, shirt dresses, white turtlenecks (even in Summer!), decorative scarves, classic button-down shirts, light-colored and comfortably sized denim, bucket hats, driving shoes, straw bags, totes, button-down cardigans (tied over the shoulders if it's warm), sun visors, and matching pajama sets (always).
Apparently, I will never acquire the Coastal Grandma look. I hate linen, cashmere is too hot, the more color the better in my art, decor and clothing, my preferred music is country or soft rock, I'll take a soft cowl neck over a turtleneck any day, I prefer sangria to white wine and I don't even own a cardigan, much less wear one. The Coastal Grandma look actually sounds like Preppie Goes Senior Citizen minus the pastel colors . I'd describe my preferred way of dressing as "channeling my Inner Dorothy" from Golden Girls - she always had on draping, flowy stuff.

It sounds like Eileen Fisher would fit right in with this trend.

Oh Lord, me either. Never gonna happen.
I have never worn matching pajama sets, decorative scarves, bucket hats, any color turtlenecks/chinos, or driving shoes in my life and never intend too.
That Grandma needs to get comfortable.

The driving shoes I can see, or at least designate one pair of shoes to drive in so the heel on the right shoe doesn't wear down faster than the left heel (or get really dirty). I think the last time I had matching jammie sets was when I was a little kid. Never owned any chinos, although I did wear scarves back in the 90's when they were really popular.
I'm surprised though that a look that has been around for decades is suddenly a "trend". But hey - if you have the stuff to list, and if key words "coastal grandmother" sells it, go for it!

I'm listing a bunch of linen.
However, I don't think Coastal Grandmas listen to Rage Against the Machine and wear camo, so that lets me out. Also, money.

I can aspire to the luxurious ocean front property, gardening (will have to be container gardening if I'm going to be living on the beach), walks on the beach (wind or no wind), and fresh meals from my farmer's market haul. The rest just sounds to me like coastal grandma is the preppy kid growing old.

I know some sort of 'coastal grandma' types, but they're more 'coastal middle aged' - they're too active for the 'grandma' stereotype. My sister-in-law would aspire to that lifestyle (and do it well) - she's the one who sent her machinehead sister-in-law a cute powder blue sweatshirt with puppy heads on it. I thanked her for it and said that it's always nice to have a warm shirt to wear, but privately could not figure out how my brother allowed her to buy me such a thing as a gift.I was going to wear it to work on my car and bikes, but then decided that those puppies WERE cute and someone was going to love it, so after keeping it for a symbolic year I donated it.

All the coastal grandmas in my family dressed in flowered shirts and shorts, muumuus, Alfred Dunner type outfits. It was always a bonus when the flowered shirt matched the flowered pants and your sandals and purse had matching flowers too. Oh and cannot forget the beach coverup tee shirt that has a curvy woman with a bikini on, lol.

Good lord, I’ve had a few occasions lately where I am flipping through the racks in a department store and see a top that I think is kind of cute. I look at the label and see the words “Alfred Dunner” and just want to light my hair on fire and run through the store screaming, “Shoot me now!”

Years ago I swore I will never wear Dunner and/or elastic waist pants. IMO that is the ultimate old lady apparel and I just won't go there no matter how many years I am here on earth.
Not gonna happen, not at all. Never.

I found a Dunner jacket that shocked me. SHAWKED ME. It was a wool blend with a small black and grey check pattern, black trim lightly fitted and had a totally retro equestrian vibe. I actually purchased it for myself, a few tucks and it was suddenly steampunk. ?? I figured someone had snuck a rogue pattern into their design room.
I'll wear elastic waist pants as long as they're not elastic all the way around, just in back - a lot of funky balloon cargo pants and skirts have that sort of waistline, but that's about it. Since I'm kind of straight up and down nothing fits in the waist, anyway.

I have this problem with Tanjay, every now & then, I'll think something is cute & then wince. I thought I had the problem with Koret, but Koret has totally changed up their label & now actually DOES have some cute stuff. I've sold some of it too, with no problems.

Koret actually has quality sewing. I've never been able to sell it, though.

Dunner has great summer prints. Unfortunately, most of their tops are too short. I'm 5'4" and short-waisted and the tops are still too short. The retailer with the ugly, boring granny prints now is Kohls. Their plus prints suck. Dunner has been updating some of the styles but they still make the 90-year old granny stuff too. Ruby Rd is a sister brand that makes more timely styles and prints.

Dunner is trending on TikTok. Here’s just one example. www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdWFcjLA/?k=1If only I could go back in time 5 years to every thrift and stock up.

No need for time travel. You can come to the Salvation Army store closest to my house and find all the Dunner you heart desires. Bring plenty of empty suitcases because filling them will not be an issue.

This sounds like Diane Keaton...with none of the zest, irreverence or delightful eccentricity. Diet Diane Keaton? ETA: One of my favorite movie grandma looks is Barbra Streisand in Meet The Fockers.
