I'm in the city. Proper. Not rural, not just outside of, but In. The. City. I see deer all the time when I'm out and about. Buck with stags, does, even a fawn once. I have no idea where they live, since I don't have any farmland nearby. There is a vacant unsold lot near me, probably several acres, and the deer could be living there, but I've seen them in parks and yards in other occupied parts of town with no visible nearby park or wild land. Guess it's a mystery up there with the Bermuda triangle On a smaller kritter note, the squirrel who lives in the tree outside my patio is very annoyed with us. It's patio weather now and the kitties get to go out on the patio during the day. Edgar (the squirrel, I named him) doesn't like it and chatters up a storm when the cats are out there. I told him to suck it up and deal with it, because I pay the rent and therefore get to decide who uses the balcony and when.

Friend in Florida lives right by a large river and a swamp, where huge alligators come out to sunbathe along the banks. When she lived in Naples, there were plenty of black bears running around the neighborhood. I said I'd take the gators over the bears. I know I can outrun a gator.
Whenever I can't find where I put something, before I have a meltdown, I try to mentally backtrack when the last time I had it and try to remember what I was doing and where I might have put it. Or try the process of elimination starting with the most obvious places it wouldn't be, like the bathroom or kitchen and narrow down the rooms. Or start from one end of the apartment to the other to narrow down possibilities. Whatever keeps me from spazzing out and more often than not, I'll find something else I'd forgotten about along the way. I'm always trying to find ways to keep my sense of humor through this getting older crap.

I have names for the squirrels who invade my balcony and they'd all be considered 4-letter. We're supposed to have branches cut way back finally so hopefully we'll be able to put out some Christmas lights and our sign that says "Nool" without the wiring chewed through.

There are a lot of wooded areas around me in my rural area. But when there are bear sightings, everyone goes nuts. If one is seen in the Pittsburgh area, it will be on the news. And, HTG, a bear was hit by a car in the Pgh area today and climbed a tree. So all of the news stations reported on it. Bear is okay.

This summer was bad here in CT. The bears were breaking into many homes and even cars, and the State warned us not to leave food or groceries in unattended cars in our driveways. The bears stand straight up on their hind legs and open the car doors and will pull out the food. We never saw them until the summer of 2020 when they started here in our area. On our local Facebook groups were so many posting pictures all summer long of bears in their yards, pulling feeders down, opening doors, etc. I used to leave our sunroom doors open at night and just lock the sliding glass door screens, now we have to be sure that the glass doors are closed and locked or they would break right through the screens. I'm sick of it. On the video of them in the back here, they were standing right up staring at us. They are scary when they are up on their hind legs, over 6' tall. Please post the vid, anyone who has such delicate sensibilities that they can't handle swearing when there's bears at your deck, doesn't have to watch it. I swear like a sailor, so & there are no bears at my deck :-(

I have a field with trees across the road from my house and there is a herd of about 14 deer living there. They cross the road many times a day to come into my yard and eat whatever isn't covered with deer netting, then travel around the neighborhood.

One time on a walk in a nearby neighborhood we saw a Javelina family but that's about it for wildlife here. There's other desert wildlife but we don't live close to a desert area. Shopped a lot this weekend and Cliff was home for four days so wasn't able to get much done, worked a good part of the day yesterday listing and didn't make that much of a dent. Hopefully today I'll get caught up but then there's a silly amount of stuff to organize/put away. Vicious cycle. I was hiking on Christmas Day one year at Saguaro National Monument & came across a family, they were like 5 feet away & it was so cool! So different from the usual coyotes, elk, deer, wild turkey, rattlesnakes & foxes here (& the occasional moose). Got back to my parents' house & they said they are usually very shy, so it was apparently quite a sighting. Then again, they don't know sh%t about hiking, so they may have been totally wrong, but I found it so cool to be up close & personal to such an unusual creature!

I have seen one in the wild, while hiking, once. It was the coolest thing ever! Oddly, I don't think I swore. I was too fascinated & enthralled. Of course there's a big diff between being in their habitat & them being in your habitat! You can bet I'd be swearing if there was one at my back deck. ETA: Val, val2525 not too familiar with your area but I have lived in 2 states where there are deer in the city. It's not that unusual. They get so accustomed to us in certain areas, that they aren't afraid at all. Plus the mule deer we have here aren't skittish anyway. In MN, it was white tails & they are more skittish, but can still get accustomed to you. My seamstress is in the city, on a regular city block, but closer to the mtns than me & she has deer in her tiny city yard all the time. Right up to the house! Last time I was there, there was several of them looking in her window at the cat on the other side.

Last place I lived at in Tampa FL backed up to a big piece of conservation land, and on the other side of the land was a lake. Hootie loved watching the egrets, sandhill cranes, rabbits, more birds than I can name, and other kritters. I never saw any alligators by my unit, but we did have them in both lakes on the property.

Update: pre-op blood work wasn’t the best so vet recommended not doing the surgery. They will take the growth off his elbow. Hubby will get him later.
Dropped the oldest Lab off at the vet this morning to get a growth in his mouth removed, a dental and get a growth on his elbow removed. He is 12 so I worry about him. The growth in his mouth is apparently a common benign growth of his gum called an Epulis. Vet said that had to go so we are having the other stuff done. Hubby will pick him up later.
Of course work called at 0600 I guess to see if I could come in early. If I feel like it I may call later. I got no sleep last night. Taking a dog in for surgery is a PITA in a multi dog house. I took him for a walk at 11:45 last night and hubby took him this morning (otherwise he would be eating poop). We keep the yard clean but we wanted to make sure he didn’t eat any. TMI. He was “nothing last 6 PM”.
Hubby will get him later. Hopefully he will do ok. He is 12 and if the vet said it didn’t have to be done, I would have let it go.

Your furbabies keep you busy labby, fingers crossed for a good outcome.
know bears are a dangerous nuisance but I get a lot of animal videos in my FB feed and I always get a chuckle when there's videos of them enjoying someone's pool with or without their cubs or seeing them try to play on/with kids toys that are in the yard. They're are definitely smart.

We saw a black bear when we were on a fishing vacation in Minnesota. it walked right by the cabin we were staying at. DH and I were both too awed to think about getting the camera until it was almost too late, then we only got a photo of his rear end! LOL
My tree rats are ALL called some colorful four letter words!

Hubby is headed to get him now. The growth on his elbow was cauterized so that makes it easier for us.

I was once driving in the evening when a skunk family (mother and five babies) crossed the road slowly right in front of me. Yes, you better believe I stopped for them.

Kritter isn't the only one who can do a weather gloat.
It's been in the 70s here all week & we haven't had a hard freeze yet so I still have 3 clumps of cone flowers in my garden.
Watering them today I noticed a very tiny visitor, it's wings are smaller then a pinkie fingernail.

My bougainvilleas and roses are blooming full blast. I usually start cutting the bougs back by now pending a freeze but they are having such a good show that I haven't done it yet.

Everything here is just covered with moss lol. I noticed the other day that the sign indicating the freeway on ramp ahead on one street was so covered with moss that it was unreadable - but the shape was familiar. Yes, moss grows on metal - at least the stuff here, does.
The DH is talking about more cats (he's a crazy cat gent) - I told him that Cassie and Jamie would be sending us a pair of cats in due time, and we need to keep our eyes open.

There was a huge crash last night and it sounded like the kitchen was being destroyed, then a flying caped creature zoomed at warp speed around the living room and into the bedroom and he didn't look very happy. It was Simon, he was nosing around some bags on the breakfast bar and got caught by the handle of one of the bags, which of course freaked him out and he knocked down anything in his path trying to get away from the bag, which was around his neck and following him. I had to crawl under the bed to reach him and get the bag off, but at least he didn't run away when I found him, and he let me help. He finally came out from under the bed about an hour later and came up on the couch with me. I know it scared Simon and I feel like a bad cat mom for laughing (but not until I knew he was safe), but it was funny as heck once I realized what was going on. That happened to Hootie once too (once was all it took, Hootie avoided bags after that). Chap, unless cats are dropped off in your yard like what happens to Kritter, you and the DH might have to make yourselves available for the cats to find you...like visiting shelters or adopting online.

We had a terrible time finding a cat when our Winston passed and we were ready to replace him (how can you replace the un-replaceable?). Because we were being honest about the fact that our cats are allowed outside if it wished, free to wander our half acre yard, it was automatically assumed it would be eaten by coyotes. We were denied multiple times before our 2 bundles of joy were delivered to our home by the kind souls at a cat rescue about 100 miles away. I hope your dream kitties just arrive at your yard (that's how we got ALL our cats previously, sometimes in fuzzy little groups 💕 ) but be prepared to search for them as well.
It's national cookie day AND national sock day- today should be a national holiday!! Our stove is on its last legs so we bought a new one with a glass cooktop and convection oven. Can't wait for it to be delivered Wednesday when I'll start baking this years Christmas cookies!

LOL Yep, never a shortage of cats here. The latest one who will arrive tomorrow will have to start out in the backyard cat pen because there are no more rooms available in my house.
His owner was arrested for assault and battery and is in jail with a $100,000 bond out which I don't see happening. He was arrested last Thursday night and his dog and cat were turned over to our ACS. He has 2 weeks to get somebody to pick them up or they will go up for adoption. She has been kept in a cage in an enclosed garage down at the PD and is not a happy camper.
Our next cat flight leaves next Wednesday. The two momma cats and one of the kittens will be headed west to cold and rainy country.

Chap, I hope you are soon united with two more bundles of furry joy. I'm sure Cassie and Jamie would want you both to give 2 more cats the kind of lives they had.
For those in warm climates, please keep posting pics of your beautiful flowers. Around here, I'm just happy to still see green grass, which will probably be covered in white to match the sky and other than the evergreens, it's stick figure trees. bah

Well, the chances of cats being suddenly abandoned in our yard are 0 to none, but we don't want to just rush out. Keeping our eyes open for our new emissaries does involve looking in at adoption places and just generally being available (Jamie and Cassie were rescues, for instance, that the DH wasn't looking for, but they were looking for him). When we see those cats, we'll know it, wherever they happen to be.

Poor Simon. He used to love sitting in the mailing bags as I opened packages and watching me open everything. I'd clear out the bag first and he'd hope in. Not today. I guess yesterday's bag battle is still in his mind.

When we redid our back deck we had the floorboards torn off to the joists. Jamie Leafy Butt used to dance around on the joists like nothing, but Cassie must have fallen through at some point, about 4 feet to the ground, because she developed a sudden fear of surfaces and, apparently, thresholds (I suspect she waltzed through the sliding glass doors and went right down between the joists.
For weeks while we rebuilt the deck, she went around with her tail fluffed out, testing every doorway by putting an exploratory paw over it, then creeping across. The checkered tiled kitchen floor disturbed her. She crept through the front door when she went out, one paw at a time. Then she would be fine and just go about her business, but coming back in was an operation.
When we finally finished the deck, she wouldn't go out (it had been a favourite spot before). I finally had to carry her out and set her onto the deck and watch how she did. She stood there, her paws splayed out, then started this sort of mincing progress, her tail fluffed out again. About a week later, she was back running around on the deck. Cassie was always a very psychological cat but this was really something.
I suspect Simon will soon master the bags once again!
