I've tried every service I see and shipping to the west coast is no less than $50 for a sewing machine case I am listing. Sellers are selling it with free shipping for not much more than the $50. It can ship to closer distances for $20ish so I am listing lower and adding shipping, but there must be something I am missing? I looked at a comforter that I have, and I see the shipping has gone to $150 to the west coast. It wasn't that high when I listed it and no way will it ever sell either so hoping someone has some insight on which service to use to ship these bulky items.

Where are the other sellers located? If they are in the midwest or central US, then they don't usually go out more than 4 zones. Or, they are just stupid.

I found one in California offering free shipping and free returns. I should order one just to see how it's shipped! From Ohio, it's 8 zones to California. I didn't realize that, I thought we would be more in the center than that indicates.

UPS? I don't sell many heavy or bulky items but UPS is less expensive. Have you tried selling locally on Marketplace?

I'd check out FedEx or UPS for anything larger like that. USPS is pricing themselves outta the market for larger packages, not that DeJoy gives a hoot.

Coast to coast is a pita. One of the reasons I stopped selling briefcases. USPS got so expensive. Wish I lived in the Midwest. Most of my stuff was going to the west coast or NE.

I could swear that some of the sellers work in a place where they can use the company's UPS account. I have tried to sell some items that are heavy but with free shipping.

For anything oversize that would cost an arm and a leg and a foot to ship via USPS, I use UPS. There is not a convenient FedEx nearby, and I don't trust that lot anyway. Be sure if you use UPS to exclude shipping to PO boxes.

I don't know about UPS. A few months ago I sent DD a few of mom's things, one was this balsa flying lady thing, light but pretty long. From TX to OR it was over $40 USPS so I took it it UPS and it was $2 more! And since I had already hauled it down there I went ahead and shipped from there

I tested the prices by changing the shipping policy I use (I have a shipping policy for each carrier), saving the listing, clicking in "see details" next to the shipping cost, and then plugging in the zip code 90010. It shows how much it costs to ship from here to there, and all of the methods are just as expensive. With USPS there is at least a break if it ships locally. I tried UPS ground, USPS parcel select, Fedex Smartpost (which I got an error on). Looking at other listings, you don't see which carrier they use (at least not that I see).

At one place I worked, we could ship UPS using their account at their discounted rate and we would reimburse them. I typically just sold lightweight clothes that went USPS First Class, but if I was shipping heavy, bulky items, savings were significant.

So I sold the comforter that I had mentioned in my first post. It went to Virginia, and she paid $62.08 for shipping. My cost to ship it Fedex through ebay was only $28.78 (the size of the package and weight were correct on the listing as I had packed and measured it prior to listing it). I think that answers how sellers can afford to sell it for a lower price, although it would still have varying costs based on how far it is going.
I would think ebay would pass at least part of that shipping savings on to the buyer to keep the cost down, but I guess not. In this case I had given the buyer a 40% discount off the price of the item so I was glad to get $30 of that back on the shipping savings!

I hope the shipping cost was hidden on the label. I think it is with FedEx.

Watch out for a bill from FedEx through Ebay in the coming weeks. Lots of threads on the Ebay boards about FedEx rates not agreeing with what Ebay charges.
Sellers get monster additional charges and can't contest them because the account is in Ebay's name and the dispute has to come from the account holder.
If you took it to a FedEx store and had them weigh it to confirm weight plus any dimensional charge than you are probably OK.

Should have known it was too good to be true since it's ebay. I dropped it off at an Office Depot, and they just looked to see that it had already been paid for so no help there.

Lately it seems like every single 2-3 lb package I have is going to the east coast, It's getting so expensive. Pirateship is now offering UPS. Haven't tried it yet but it looks like the cheapest UPS option takes quite a while to arrive. I guess it doesn't matter though. You can add it as an option and buyer can choose what they want. There's a UPS store pretty close, only thing holding me back it not having the right size boxes. USPS makes that part easy.

You would think ebay would figure out that their calculator is not working when they have to turn around and charge sellers additional dollars every time it's a large package. Thankfully it works for the part where the customer is charged, just not on the part where the seller pays for the shipping cost, and the total I paid is still less than what she paid for the shipping. I still can't figure out how the other sellers can sell the sewing machine case with free shipping though.

Right on time. It seems like it takes a month or so for the FedEx bills to come back around. At least you had some small change left from the $30 shipping savings that really wasn't.
