I've been reading about this today and have mixed feelings about this latest program. I don't think they chose their wording wisely- mandatory AND forever- I think those words induce knee-jerk reactions. My shop missed the mandatory earnings to require it this year but if I keep my current sales level I'll get sucked into it soon. (The only reason I missed their requirement is because every time they pull this kind of stuff I go off the deep end, stop listing there, hate the venue and have to talk myself off the selling-on-Etsy ledge.)
What do you all think- is it good for sellers, good for Etsy, both or ?? I'd really like some insight and maybe a glimmer of hope that it isn't just another money grab.

I just briefly glanced at that figuring to read it in depth later, but now I can't find it again. Can you post a link please?
ETA: I came across this Etsy forum thread, for your reading pleasure

I remember reading some kind of notice about the off Etsy advertising. I may have it wrong but i thought everyone was automatically enrolled in it and had to affirmatively opt out if they don't want to play. I figure they bury you if you do. But I read it as automatic enrollment, not mandatory. Etsy has been very dead for me for a long time. If not for inertia, I'd be gone already. So I can't go lower there than I am. I have people put items in their cart--3 have on one piece right now!--and still no sales.

My shop died and I closed it - didn't matter what I did, and I went along with all of Josh's stupid. I think this is just another money grab - they have to keep showing growth. Having said that, if I were hitting the 10k/yr mark on Etsy, I'd go with whatever.
Got interrupted - I meant I would go with whatever it took to keep going even though I'd hate it. I wouldn't like it because it's mandatory and you cannot opt out at that point. They're forcing sellers to try to pump Etsy's bottom line.
It's definitely mandatory over $10k

They should just raise the fees on everyone across the board - they'd make more $ and the cost to each seller would be less. They're already promoting all sellers at some point off-site anyway, so why penalize just the sellers?

I'm sure they will do that too.

Wait, so they are putting your ads out and are basically doubling the fee if you sell something through that ad? At least on eBay you get to pick how much they gouge you. Etsy has seemed to make a lot of bad choices over the past few years.

"How much they gouge you"- I LOVE that!! If what one of the CFO's said is true, they have little to lose since they're not concerned about 'seller churn'. That was Rachael someone, which reminded me of Meg Whitman and 'the noise'. Arrogant ba****ards I think they are.

I wonder how many off Etsy ad clicks the average seller has? It would be nice to see some kind of figures on that. If it's something like one in every 25 sales, just a small increase on everything in a shop would subsidize that expense. If it's one of three, then that would be harder to absorb with a reasonable price increase.

Yep, I was wrong. But it was a bit of arrogance no matter who said it.

Whitman called sellers 'noise' but there's no 'link, please' as it was in the print media. Donohoe said sellers would MAKE noise.
CFO Glaser at Etsy is as arrogant as the both of them, though. Etsy is posting big profits so there's no reason to change, though it won't be long before Josh's stupid initiatives start eroding them. They've already had to back-walk three of their shiny new ideas - yhe 'free shipping will be the core of this site' - um...no it won't because they lost profit on that one because it canted the search so badly. Then the 'cheap and easily replicated' - ooops "Selling the cushions and not the couch" ok - dump that. Then it was the ridiculous 'it's mostly wimmin on this site and we know how stupid they are, so we'll design a secret sauce program for advertisement 'leveraging' our massive knowledge based on our broken search and do it all for them' - except we have more brain than that idiot and bailed fast when the program so obviously didn't work.

I am part of several FB groups for crafters and some of the big ones are asking buyers to NOT click on ads they see off Etsy because of it.
Ever since the ex-Ebay CEo took over, things have gone downhill quickly.
