Now Etsy is leading the pack and will begin to collect global sales tax for New Zealand. Here's the happy notice announcing this latest adventure. GST for New Zealand This just feels fundamentally wrong to me but I'm often resistant to change. Any comments from sellers? (not just Etsy sellers because I'm sure the rest of the world will require this soon).

It's the country's VAT, and buyers pay it. I don't see what there is for a seller to worry about. It's not our issue.

I believe that eBay has done it for Australia for a little while now, too.

It has nothing to do with us insofar as collections/disbursements - Australians pay a 10% VAT and looks like Kiwis are now doing so as well.

So it's a non-issue to be collecting taxes for a different country? I understand that it's not mine to actually collect but it still eems strange. Right now sales tax figures are showing up in our Etsy total sales figures, not as a separate line item. Hope they separate that before tax time because since I expected a figure in the totals I haven't kept track of sales tax they collect. Ugh.

Sales tax is charged by destination, not origin, so eBay or wherever is collecting it for your state - China doesn't have anything to do with it save that's where the merch is coming from. Just as now Australia and NZ are levying 10% VAT (or really, 'sales tax') and it's collected and remitted to Australia/NZ as the destination.

I just purchased small gold thank you stickers from a seller in China. I don't care how long they take to get here. The regular USA person I buy them from went up to 23.00 plus 4.00 shipping for a 500-sticker roll, and I wasn't paying that. I think she over-doubled her price. So, I saw some similar and ordered them for 3.47 with free shipping. If they are crappy I'll just throw them out. Anyway, I was charged 22-cents sales tax on that order. Who gets this tax? Is ebay sending sales tax to China? If you are the buyer, eBay collected it for your state and will remit it to you state on behalf of the Chinese seller. It's times like these that I'm glad I live in OR
