I purchased an iPad 2 at a church rummage sale along with a keyboard and case. No charging cord or charging block were included so I couldn’t see that the device was password locked until I charged it at home, where I had the correct cord. My first iPad was an iPad 2 and I had multiple charging accessories so one complete set was still in my tech stash even after I gave my old iPad, along with 1 set of charging accessories, to a friend.
I went to the Apple Store and they told me nothing could be done as long as it was password locked. I actually called the church to ask them to put a little notice in their bulletin, requesting that the device donor to let them know what the password was. I know I could sell the device for parts but I have a good use for it if I can get in. I volunteer for a high end non profit consignment shop that donates all their profits to charity. This year they spread their $455,000 profit to 20 other non profits including food banks, homeless shelters, and other needy organizations. I spend half a day each week appraising/pricing most of their consigned jewelry (not the precious stone jewelry) and every time I go there I have to bring an iPad from home to use for my research. I purchased the church rummage sale iPad and accessories to use at the shop so I didn’t have to bring one from home and add weight to my work bag while I hauled it up a double flight of steep stairs wrangling a cane in the other hand. Backpack won’t work as I have been dealing with hepatic shingles pain (ergo, the temporary cane) since the beginning of the year and straps would cross that nerve path.
I have a big $4.00 invested in my church purchase but also several hours at the Apple store and a couple of local tech stores and many more than that online trying to figure out if this can be done. If the device were connected to my iCloud account, it would be possible, but this is a strangers iPad. I recall the big dispute between the FBI and Apple over the San Bernardino ISIS killer’s iPhone. I know the FBI managed to break into his phone without Apples help but I don’t think either party would be available to help me. I just want to get in and factory reset the device so I can use it to do research on the internet...and leave it behind each week instead of carrying it back and forth. Any suggestions?
