Beautiful pics!!!!!!
After my daffodils die back, I need a load of topsoil, and want to plant flowers. But there is so much rock there along my driveway wall, that the flowers just don't do well.

How about some of the groundcover creeper type flowers, Denise? If it's a full sun spot, portulaca (also called moss rose) would look nice there and they don't need really deep soil. Low maintenance too. www.gardenersnet.com/flower/mossrose.htm

Its called Purslane here and it does very well in poor soil and heat.
I quit planting it because it doesn't do cold well at all and I tend to gravitate towards perennials so I don't have to replant the same beds every year.

I was just reading on pinterest last night that you can plant milkweed in containers and butterflies go crazy for it.
No one is eating yet from my thistle feeder or hummer one.

One problem with growing milkweed is they are very prone to getting aphids.
And it's a bugger getting rid of them because you can't use insecticides cause it will kill the butterflies.
Butterfly bush is a better choice, it's gorgeous, the butterflies love it and it's easy to grow.
Or Lantana, it loves the sun and comes in lots of colors.

Shirley, I have four butterfly bushes. I always plant lantanna in containers but have not seen any so far. I've got almost all of my planting finished. Got a potting bench for mother's day. Waiting for the kids to put it together. I will plant a few super shade things to decorate on it. I have one deck with a pergola that's covered with wisteria and that is where I'm putting it. It's so so shady that mostly just things like ferns survive there.

I have one butterfly bush, think the cold winter might have gotten it this time. So far not a sliver of new growth, usually I see some green by now. Lost a bunch of bushes this past winter and roses too. Told Dh from now on nothing gets planted unless it's cold hardy to -30 or -40 because the -10 to -20 stuff just doesn't make it.

I swear, I'm changing the title of this discussion to "flower chat" if someone - anyone - doesn't post a picture or two.

My poppies are just starting to pop. I came across this photo from last year. I took it just at dawn and really liked the way it came out. (The stick/stump at the left side of the photo is the remnants of my beautiful lilac bush that blew down in a microburst/mini tornado we had 2 years ago. It didn't totally die and is now starting to come back. Hopefully I'll have blooms in a few years!)

Nice! I haven't seen hibiscus up here yet, kritter. If they didn't come in yesterday or today, then next weekend. I need a red one for outside the living room window so the cat can watch the hummingbirds.

WOW Tabby, what a difference.
With all this rain, mine stopped blooming but didn't quit growing. I am going to have to add the one by the backdoor to the "cut back" list.

To keep Val happy here are some flowers. I have a raised bed that is for the critters, it has morning glory and then wildflowers and it is left pretty wild and ungroomed so they have seeds and nectar. So far the morning glories are blooming, plus straw flowers and alyssum. Other things are sprouting underneath and will bloom as the season goes on.

Here it is from the front and then my tomatoes. By the end of the season all the trellis get covered with the morning glory and they climb on the back fence too.

I didn't go to Lowes today but snagged a Bougainvillaea tree at Walmart today for $7. Came in a very nice planter pot too.
Only thing that put it on the Clearance table was that it wasn't blooming right now.

Shirley - love love love the morning glory and the wildflowers. Did you start them from plants or seed?
Kritter - I sure could use your green thumb.
We are still chilly here and Mr. Groundhog is eating petunias faster than I can plant.

Shirley, are you referring to the cobalt blue flowers as strawflowers? I have them growing in my yard. They're called cornflowers or bachelor's buttons here and they self seed.

Roy I have had the critter garden for 4 years now. The morning glory reseeds itself and I haven't had to plant any seeds since the 2nd year.
Some of the wildflowers will reseed themselves, alyssum especially, but each year I get a bag of wildflower mixed seeds and put them in. So I never know how it will look each year or what flowers or colors I will get, which is half the fun for me.
By mid summer it's a real jungle and the birds, bees, lizards and toads have made it their home.

thanks Titus, I couldn't remember what they were called. I love that I have so much blue color this year. Can't wait to see what the rest of the plants will be. Lots of other stuff is starting to bud out now so I will get some more colors soon. As long as it keeps the birds and butterflies happy then I'm happy with whatever comes up.
