Anyone have experience with pottery? I found a studio piece from Clifton Earthworks Cincinnati with the name Hasselle on it. From my googling, Robert Hasselle operated Clifton Earthworks in the late 70's while teaching at the University of Cincinnati. He also taught at Ohio State at one point. Anyhoo, my question is can I include that type of information with a disclaimer stating this is information I've gleaned from researching but I can't say for certain it's a Hasselle piece? I didn't find a representation of his signature anywhere, and I wouldn't call the Hasselle that is on the back a signature. It's "carved" into the back of the platter as is Clifton Earthworks Cincinnati, but Hasselle is in more of a cursive whereas Clifton Earthworks Cincinnati is more of a block style. He does have a facebook page, and I thought about posting to it with a picture (if I can even do that without first friending him) asking him if it's his but I don't know--seems a little weird to do that.
A vase of his sold for $180 at an auction house (not ebay), and there is a vase for sale now on ebay for $350 (Bob Hasselle), but pieces on his facebook page are more in the $120-$200 range.
Or should I just use the words "Hasselle" and "Clifton Earthworks Cincinnati" because they are on the back? As for quality, I have no idea how to describe it. It looks good to me, but crackling and bumps and such could be important to a collector (I think everything on the front is inherent to the piece but can't say for certain, and there's marks on the back that I have no idea about). There was black magic marker on the porous area on back, and it mostly came out but you can still see it faintly plus it made a larger "water" mark (not as distinct as a water mark but the area is darker than the surrounding area). Wondering how much that would affect it? I'm thinking about doing an auction starting at $49.99. (There is one person watching the $350 vase.)
I'll take better pics for the listing as my table is not in place to get the white background right now. There is a shadow line right down the center in the first pic that won't be there when I take better pictures plus the color should pop more against a white background. It's a very attractive piece IMHO, and if I had any place for it, I'd consider keeping it.
