But flour and sugar both come from plants, so they are vegetables too.

Waiting impatiently for my son in law to til my garden. He has a bad back. Did plant my onions and have some 3" ones up already.
Picked ONE 16" asparagus a few days ago. ONE.

I got some onions & lettuce in. We're going this weekend to get wood to make raised beds. I need to get into the storage shed & dig out some of the big container pots I have there. There's a huge pile of topsoil in the front yard right now waiting for us. This is supposed to be fun but is starting to seem like work!

Will you use almond flour or coconut flour or quinoa? How about Stevia? Or honey?
Pinterest has a lot of recipes that use flour alternatives and sugar alternatives.

dpaddy....almond or coconut flour sounds interesting, but that sounds like something that I won't be able to stay away from....no will power here.
I do use honey but won't use Stevia after I did research on it. If I want to use a sweetener, I will use sugar or honey-since they are natural.
I do eat quinoa.
Thanks for the suggestions!

We got our plants but haven't put them in the ground yet. Wanted to do it this weekend but we're suppose to have storms all weekend. I went small this year and only got one flat. We're doing tomatos, yellow squash, zucchini, bell peppers, and green beans. Those are about the only veggies we've had success in growing. Our asparagus patch is rocking this year! Hope we have the same success with the garden!
Step FIL is an avid gardener. He also cans, which I haven't tried yet. He makes the best salsa! They also grow their own popcorn which is pretty darn good too.
I'm hoping our tomatos will do good this season. Fresh tomatos are so good on BLTs.

Son in law finally tilled my garden last night. Now to spend the next few days putting up my deer netting and anti-bunny fences. That is, if it quits raining....

Son in Law tilled a few days ago, and I got the weed cover down today, and the deer netting. Tomorrow I will put up my anti-bunny fence and that will take HOURS!

Still have to finish bunny fence, but ran out to buy veggie plants. Ugh-80 degrees and sunny and too hot for me. Lots to do now.

Way to go, Denise
I was at Lowe's this morning to buy some peat moss to mix in with our top soil - What a madhouse! Hubs just went to a small private greenhouse up the road to see what kind of plants they have. We may have waited too long but the weather has been so weird this spring.

Good thing is the stores will get more herbs and plants in over the next couple of weeks. Or they do here, anyway.

I couldn't find what I wanted so I bought herb seeds (they sprout fast) but I did buy a live pineapple sage plant, didn't see any seeds for that. Guess I'll pot the seeds/plant tomorrow.

The old standbys, Basil, Oregano and Rosemary. Plus I found Lime Basil, which sounded pretty cool. And of course the Pineapple Sage. In addition to tasting really good on chicken (grew it last year), I found out this year that the red flowers will attract hummingbirds I was cheap, if I bought the live plants I realized I'd have to buy a large pot too. If I got seeds, I have some colorful smaller pots already that are perfect for one herb each. So, seeds it was!

I had this whole set-up devised for pole beans & couldn't find a single pack of pole bean seeds at lowes. I'll have to look elsewhere tomorrow. My BIL has some seeds left from last year if I can't find any. Still haven't decided what I want in some of my big pots. I feel like this garden thing snuck up on me.

Done for the day. Planted zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash, acorn squash and cabbage. Plus 2 pink geraniums in the cement pots on my front porch that my dad made 50 years ago.
Lots more to plant, but I am beat.

Planted regular tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, broccoli and cukes this morning, before it started to rain. Darn.

I will never grow zucchini again. The last time I did it took over the world. Or maybe just our block. But it was still too much and I couldn't even give it all away.

My soil isn't good at all, so zucchini don't do well for me. Last year, they looked good, but I got powdery mildew on them--I guess from watering in the evening???
so I had to rip them all out.
Got my red, green and yellow peppers planted, my kale plants and green bean seeds.
Now all I have to plant are the Swiss Chard and Kale seeds. Then I am done with the planting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We built the raised beds yesterday. Filled them with topsoil & peat moss. Also filled a bunch of containers. Planted hot peppers, tomatoes, lettuce. I got spinach seeds today & picking up zucchini & pole beans from BIL. I think that is all we'll do this year. Found out Hubs has to have knee surgery & will be laid-up about 6 weeks.
I got some hanging baskets & am dividing them & re-combining into window boxes & smaller containers on the patio. That's It!

We got everything in this weekend. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, summer squash, zucchini, green beans, tomatos, and bell peppers. I'm still debating on sweet corn. We have bad luck with it so I may skip it this year.
We also planted potatoes, grape vines, rhubarb, gooseberries, black berries, and a variety of fruit trees earlier this month.
Lots of people were commenting about how late they waited to put their gardens in due to the cold weather. I always wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant. It's a long weekend and very, very rare for frost this time of year.
We didn't fence it in this year, so we may have an issue with the chickens getting in it when the tomatos start growing. I wanted to plant cherry or grape tomatos for them but we only got the beefsteak.

I have to have the deer netting. They live across the road from me and visit my garden every night. And a few years ago, I finally found a solution for the rabbits...I use weed cover at the bottom of my deer netting. The rabbits can't dig through it to get in. I attach it at the top with floral wire to the deer netting, and use garden staples to anchor it to the ground, so they can't get underneath.
Looks weird, but it works.

This has been an unusually cold spring. Some of you are going to be VERY busy by the sound of it. I am just in a beach cottage with sand and anyway we will probably be moving. I've planted two short rows of beets and several pots of romaine. I still have to buy a tomato plant. The nasturtium seeds are making nice little nasturtiums in hanging pots and I have a hanging pot of morning glories. I think I'll remove some of the morning glories and use them elsewhere with some geraniums maybe. The perennials are doing great, especially the Stargazer Lily--he's gigantic. We sure could use some RAIN.

The deer tore the snot out of my deer netting 3 days later. So I bought more netting and kept it double and also used netting I had left over. So now the side of the garden where the deer first approach has 5 layers of netting, and the rest of the fence has 3 layers.
doing my best....
I have little beanlets already! And we just had a heck of a storm so I know they will be more prevalent tomorrow when I go out.
I am picking my green onions and got 2 whole asparagus stalks.

You may be fighting a losing battle with the asparagus, Denise.
Sort of like I did last year with the tomato. Singular.

There are hiding out, I guess, Val. Maybe next year....
I know to keep the feathery things growing to feed the roots for next year. But the deer took care of those. So maybe that is the problem.

It would be soooooo discouraging to have something (even Bambi) eating the things you plant. You have to build a fortress around your garden.
But at least you have RAIN. We were supposed to get that rare phenomenon today but it's only cloudy.

Be careful what you ask for. I've been begging for rain and we got a gully washer of a T-storm yesterday and it knocked half the tomato blossoms off the plants. Good to see you on the garden board Nen. This time of year it's one of the boards hot spots!

Unfortunately (?) Mom bambi got hit by a car this afternoon while I was at DGS3 b-day party.
I love deer and feel kind of bad, but maybe she was the culprit. Heck she even comes (came) out in the daylight!
