No, Angie is going to take him with her to the vet at the spay/neuter clinic on Wednesday.

Kritter, curiosity has got the best of me and I'd like to know how a kitten/cat lets you know what their name is.

Some people whisper to horses. Kritter listens to cats when they whisper their names to her.

Kritter, curiosity has got the best of me and I'd like to know how a kitten/cat lets you know what their name is. I am not sure how it works but it usually happens when there is a single cat involved. When we have a litter of kittens, we go with a specific subject like flowers or Christmas names, or names beginning with the same letter because that way we can keep related kittens info together even if they are in different foster homes. With one off cats there is not real starting point so I have to wait until they tell me what their name is. Barney and I were sitting in the cat pen not long after he arrived and I just got the feeling his name was Barney. I wasn't even thinking about his name and it was just there. I hadn't even been thinking about a name for Twila and there it was. Her name was Twila. All of the searching we were doing for a name for Harley and none of them really seemed right. I had kinda put it aside and then last night, there it was. His name was Harley. I thought it was Barnaby but it isn't. It is Harley. None of these names are names that I have ever though about before or was waiting for a cat to use them like I was with Chanel. One of our fosters had named Siamese kittens kittens Coco and Chanel and I thought Chanel would be a perfect name for a Siamese so that is where her name came from. I was in a pinch for a name for Terrell when I dropped him off at the vet right after I caught him so he got his name from one of the two streets where he was dumped. This name sharing thing only seems to happen with a singular cat or kitten.

Simon told me he wasn't a Sunny (his original name). I was looking at his picture before I went over to adopt him and Simon just popped into my mind from nowhere.
How is Harley doing today?

About the same. Still having goopy eye issues.
He didn't seem like a Sunny to me either. Angie named him Sunny.

There are days I think I should have named him Scamp or Alvin (that would be the days he's into everything and getting yelled at ). Fingers and paws crossed Harley feels better soon. Speaking of Terrell, how's he doing?

It is a fight with him twice a day every day over taking his medicine. He knows when it is coming and gets in his defense posture. He should know by now that resistance is futile but nevertheless we go through the conflict. 72 doses to go.

I feel sorry for Kritter trying to get Terrell to take his meds and Terrell for not realizing it's for his own good and resisting. I hope sooner than later Terrell realizes he might as well just take his meds like a trooper and get it over with.
That's very interesting about how the names come about. All I could think of is Kritter sitting there with a huge baby name book going through the lists thinking which fits. Saves a lot of time waiting for inspiration to hit.
I also hope Harley gets fluids or whatever he needs to feel a lot better asap. He sort of reminds me of Terrell.

Nope, nobody around this house has time to sit around going through baby books looking for kitten names.
No rush to name a kitten. I know they will tell me when they are ready for me to know their name.
Worked every time so far. We don't mess with what works in Kritter City.

You may have a practicing spay/neuter program but I think the shortage of sunlight in your area is also keeping the kitten population down. A cat's breeding cycle is controlled by the amount of daylight. Studies show that cats need at least 12 hours of continuous daylight to start cycling. Since you are up there in cloud country with moss growing everywhere, 12 hours of sunshine is not all that common like it is down here. Less sunshine, fewer kittens Ah...that's probably a big reason. The spay/neutering here is people having their own pets taken care of, but there's also a loose organization that takes care of feral cat colonies and a lot of small organizations that help in local areas, which has mitigated the problem a lot down through the years. But our days are pretty darn short in the fall/winter and sometimes it seems to be twilight all day. They have to make hay in the summer months when we have 15-16 hours of daylight!

Dogs are just happy to be on the show. Cats will settle for nothing less than running the show.

There must be thousands of litters of kittens up in Alaska. That sun is shinning bright from before 5AM in the morning, straight through the entire day, into the "night" and still going until 2AM the next morning in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Only a few hours of real night-time there. That is so interesting to know!

They probably freeze to death before they grow up or get buried in snow.. Plus, there are predators like grizzly and black bears, eagles, owls, wolves, etc. that probably help control populations.

The birds I rescued sort of did the same thing...Rocky & Crystal became Phil & Lil, Liberty became Woobie, Mickey became Papa. With birds it was about how they responded to a name, I always thought of it as new name, new home, new life.

He is doing better. He got a Convenia shot and a shot for nausea so maybe he will eat more. The vet thinks he has a virus.
85% of the female cats at the clinic yesterday were pregnant. That is not a good sign. Looks like my dining room will soon change from the ebay box center to a foster kitten room.

Harley has finally decided that being sick really sucks when you are a kitten.

I can relate. I spent most of my "kitten" years sick a lot and it sure does suck.
How is he doing? The second pic looks like he's eating pretty good, or is he just flattened out?

I see those white paws! He looks pretty comfy cats (as the DH used to say when we had cats). BTW, I came home the other day to see a box on my porch, and in it were two cat statues, both long haired, one sitting regally and the other a small matching statue of a curled up kitten. Where did they come from? When I hoped Jamie and Cassie would send us a pair I didn't expect them to be ceramic! The DH grabbed the box and stuck it downstairs, without even looking at it, and said "we'll take it to donations." (we're cleaning out the house). I'm not a knickknack person but...really, this seemed rather significant! I brought the box upstairs, gently chided the DH and we unpacked them. A moment later he's looking for a nook for the taller cat and found a spot on the library shelf for the kitten. The vase the cat replaced went to donations today. Much better!
Turns out our neighbour gave them to us because she felt badly that we had lost our cats. So we have two cats but, well, they're not very interactive, though nice to look at.

What a cute little kitten. I wish I could have a kitten/cat because I need someone to chase the mice away besides me, lol. But with my allergies and 2 birds left just not in the cards.
Just before my DH passed I asked him to send me birdies and butterflies to let me know he was ok. The night that he passed, we were sitting at the picnic table at the campground where I was staying and a lady with a 3 pound huge blue parrot comes up to the table to talk. Parrot walked down the table and got on my arm, let me pet him and then I went inside and got my DH's peanuts in the shell and I held the bird while he ate peanuts. I didn't ever see or talk to the lady before that night, but all 4 of us who were in the hospital room with DH when I told him that, felt that was a sign that DH was good. Since then I have had more birds than ever in my backyard and 3 or 4 condolence cards have had butterflies, maybe it is coincidence but you never know.
Maybe your cats are sending you a message that it is time and to get ready because cats/kittens are looking for you and your DH.

Is that a before and after pic? Because he looks fairly decent in the top pic. My camera is just an old Kodak Easyshare plus it is hard to take pics of black cats so those are the best that I could do. He looks very handsome now and weighed in this morning at 3 lbs. 6 ounces which puts him right on track for his age. No boney parts either. The best part is that he is running around my bedroom playing with toys and even meowed at me this morning that he was ready for his overnight stay in the bathroom to be over. That was a first.

allikat - that's a wonderful story! Butterflies are a traditional symbol for the soul, and Hummingbirds traditionally are harbingers of joy and peace. I have my eye out for those cats, though....
